Sad news, Randall Smith booted from MESA

Is that a JBL in there??
At that time the premium speaker upgrade was an Altec 417-8H, which is what that one is. It’s the speaker in the classic Carlos Santana amps, and has a very powerful and punchy tone. It’s also a heavyweight that helps make this tiny combo heavier than it looks, especially combined with the serious iron Randy was using for transformers. It still sounds wonderful.

I wonder if there is an ir of that in the axe?

One from an old list is 097 Altec, which is a 2x12 open back cab based on this speaker. It should be like a big combo cab. I’m not sure if it’s FAS or if one of the other makers modeled it.

Looking in the wiki now. It might be in the legacy cabs.

Update: 295, 296, 297, 298 in factory bank 1 are from Ownhammer, based on a 1x12 Fender Deluxe cab with the Altec 417-8H in it. Will have to check my legacy list when I fire up the FM9 to see if the old Santiago cab is there.

I saw a 4x12 (!) on the OH site based on the Altec. I’d love to hear one of those, but it must weigh as much as a Prius.

Not sure how it happened, special request or what, but my Mark-nothing had a JBL 15".

Of course we are all expecting you to shoot irs from various positions and different microphones (top shelf please) for nothing & forever.

:-p

Thanks
Pauly

It might not suck you know.

I'd bet Randall did his best to train and mentor the folks who were staying, and they did their best to inhale everything they could. For those who were staying on, it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

Nobody thought he'd stay forever, or that the company would fold when he left, so this is the only likely outcome, Chicken Little and his ilk aside.

It has nothing to do with “chicken little” for me. We’re talking Gibson…slowly the amps will become cheaper or they will stay superior and cost $20,000. What sort of innovation or budget will Gibson put into advancing and innovation of the product line especially if the economy takes more of a nose dive than it already has? I suppose if they can keep their high profile endorser like Pertrucci they have a chance.

IDK, Gibson and tube amps just doesn’t jive with me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very familiar with Gibson's catch and kill history, I'm an Opcode Studio Vision refugee.

I'm just hoping Mesa can survive and rock on. Not that I'm likely to buy one of their amps, but i still wish the brand and its heritage well, right up until they don't deserve it anymore.

Yes I agree it would be a real shame to see the Mesa Boogie brand slip away. Definitely some major history involved especially with my generation and the early lore of Santana playing a modded fender by Randall when he was just a tech and Santana saying this amp really “boogies”. I can’t claim whether any of this was true, but sounds good. I was a huge Santana fan back then and that’s how I became a Mesa Boogie and PRS fan.

Where I have no faith in Gibson's business sense, they do have a history with tube amps that goes quite a way back. The attached pictures are of a Gibson guitar amp I own that was built around 1942. It has 6V6 output tubes and sounds reasonably good. Not many features (like tone controls) and the speaker does double duty as the power supply choke. But it's a interesting piece of guitar history.

Those early amps definitely have history. Very cool sample!
