At the time Cliff said he was kicking around several ideas. If they were implemented using that memory they wouldn't be available on the Mk I only the Fullres IRs are in that category, and they were implemented by taking over the last User Cab bank.

I think having variable IRs would be interesting but in my actual experience using the Fractals I kinda doubt it'd be something earthshaking. I get sounds I want now using the variety of IRs we have. When I had various Helixii I didn't find their UI overly useful, nor were their IRs anything special, so I used my Ownhammer, Redwirez, and Celestion IRs instead which had enough variety to keep me happy.

That said, Cliff's preview IR has me intrigued by itself, simply because it sounds, as is, really good with each preset I've thrown it at. I adjust the low cut when I don't want it to sound too much like a 4x12. Whether it's a new microphone or a whole new process I don't know, but that one whetted my appetite.

Preview IR eh?

If you have your tone, you don't really need any updates right? Things just work. But the second you need to dial in a tone outside your go to, people who cut their teeth putting up mics on physical amps, are going to be able to put something together more comfortably using a GUI emulating the real world vs auditioning IRs.
 
I think that the audio world is headed in a direction that we kind of dumb down everything. AI Mixing, Mastering. We already have virtual instruments. Superior Drummer sounds very good along with a lot of other drum programs. There is a lot of software that does a lot of things today that were never thought of in the past. We have said for years, oh they'll never replace a real drummer, bass player, guitar player, etc. And then there are programs that do just that and are used in professional recordings. Margins have become so small, that the modern artist has to utilize as much technology as possible to be able to do everything themselves. People think that they can tell, but they really probably can't. A small section of the world can tell because they play an instrument, but the average consumer can't tell the difference. Heck, back in the 90's most people couldn't identify the use of the POD bean on major records vs the recorded amp. The next thing is vocals. We can't program vocals yet, but with Melodyne and AutoTune that could be argued.

It has always been about singers as much as us guitar players hate to admit it. That is why we put up with the singer showing up after all of the load in and don't expect them for the the load out.
 
Fractal's cab selection process is easily the worst, most frustrating part of owning the unit...

...and I'll still take that over Helix amp/cab sounds.

There's a good chance that it isn't a hardware revision away for the FMx users. All of the original cabs are still available, as well as all of the user cab slots. Seems like they found a way to fit it all without losing anything.
