Preset Name Meanings

I've searched the forum and Wiki but still haven't found what I'm looking for. Is there a list somewhere that de-mystifies the veiled titles given to the Factory Presets? Some of the presets have been built with certain songs in mind while others were created for a particular sound but no particular song. Sometimes it's obvious to figure out like, well the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' patch for instance. Other times, not so obvious. Like 'Valentine Massacre' which I assume is a My Bloody Valentine patch ('Soon' perhaps?). Then there are others where I'm just not sure at all. Patches like 'Damage Nexus' and 'Cork Sniffers' and 'Ballet Slippers'- are those just cool patches or are they a pseudonym for a song that I don't even know exists? Is there a list somewhere for this?

I found this link to a list that GibsonLesPaul made but it's really screaming for another column that answers my questions I think.8)

Interesting question. I'm not in front of my Axe right now, but if I remember correctly, Cork Sniffers is a Dumble patch (or was it Dumble and a Trainwreck patch?)... and so "Cork Sniffers" is a reference to forumites being picky to the point of ridiculousness about the tone of Dumbles, and other boutique amps, just like wine snobs sniff corks and wax poetic about the unique characteristics of each wine, cork sniffers in the amp/guitar world do the same sort of thing. Think extreme boutique- and the snobbery that goes along with it.

I figured this, Adman, being guilty of being one of those cork sniffers myself I suppose (i.e. owning a Dumble clone). I just am never sure if there is some song the name is referencing that I don't know. Thus my question about a list.

I love the patch names. When I went through every factory patch (it took me 3 days), I paid attention to what it sounded like in conjunction with the name. I was able to figure out most of them, I think. I'd have to go through them all again to figure them out again.

Valentine Massacre is basically any B Horror film. It's the impending doom sound.

Damage Nexus I don't know off the top of my head without hearing it.

Some of them you can get just off the name, but most you need the sound WITH the name.

Hell's Glockenspiel's - AC/DC Hell's Bells
Djentlemanly - Reference to Djent in general
Machine gun - Jimmy Hendrix
Sweet Child - Sweet Child O' Mine
Jim and Leo - Founders of Marshall and Fender, respectively. The patch is a Marshall matched with a Fender
I'm Nationwide - ZZ Top song

There's not really one set method used for naming. You have to use the sound, the name, and your own knowledge to figure them out. Some are song names, some are describing the sound, some are what effects are in the patch, etc...

First, not all of the presets are named for songs. Some are just examples of specific effects. Such as "Echoplex" or "PCM70 Hall". But I'll give you the ones I know are named after particular songs or artists that haven't already been mentioned.

Elegant Gypsy - Al DiMeola
Blues Aroncino - Blues Saraceno (His general tone?)
Crawling In The Dark - Hoobastank
Smokin' -Boston
Bad - U2
In A Fixx - The Fixx (Presumably the song "One Thing Leads To Another"
Walking On The Moon - The Police
Stone In Love - Journey
The Infield - The Outfield (Presumably "Your Love")

Crystal Echos and Black Hole are describing algorithms/presets from various Eventide units. 2290 delay is an example of... a Lexicon 2290 delay. Like Jiffzillla was saying :) I think a lot of the names like "Ganymede", "Emerald Ocean" and "Galaxy Formation" are just meant to be evocative; the presets have to be named something.

Here are a few:

Frogtown Irie - Frog sound bassline for a reggae song I worked on
W@rped Vinyl (ABCD) - Wish You Were Here intro
Gnome-Mans Land - Your Echoes are 2x as fast as the original. Set the MTD to 100% wet for a treat.
Echo Deva - My daughter's name. Also a VST I worked on in 2005.
A Kind of Dream (C) - Created for the Synth-only mid section of "Hemishpheres"
PopGate '88 - Rev7 gated reverb

Added some below

Flashback, dream sequence, valentine massacre, and horror movie are all sound effects.

A Clockwork Banana is a sound effect from A Clockwork Orange.

IMO, all the space stuff just describes the sound. Black Hole, and Detuned descent both detune the repeats off the delays.

Pong Chorus is just a ping pong chorus.

Poltergeist Pig is a ghost pig sound effect.

Organic sounds like an organ.

The boutique battle 1 and 2, I think are just boutique amps in parallel if memory serves me correctly.
