Flatten your EQ. Turn it up. Trust the experts.
I've never loved the stock presets. Too midrangy & dark for me. And I couldn't get an AC30 tone that I loved. I had high hopes for V10, but still felt the same way. I also had high hopes for the new Producer Mix IRs, but thought they were midrangy & dark, too. It didn't make sense to me that the people making the stock presets and the professional sound engineers making the Producer Mix IRs were getting it wrong. It had to be something on my end, right?
So, I did two things:
I realized after some experimenting that my powered PA speakers are mid-heavy, so I pulled some mids out of them. I'm going to need to get out the RTA & do this right, but for now I've made a noticeable improvement.
Then, I turned the AXE up louder than I normally do. My patches were too bright & harsh, but the stock presets sounded great! The new Producer Mix IRs sound great, too. Nice clarity & brightness without too much bacon.
