What would the new-gen even have that the current gen doesn’t?

I think the main thing for me would be more meta data and assignable lables:
  • A comment field for presets. Great for personal reminders and even better for sharable presets that could highlight for instance what expression pedal is assigned to what function, or a reminder to remove a block if there's no expression pedal 2, or whatever it could be.
  • Custom Labels for Channels, which could then be visible on the foot controller. Instead of Drive 1A, it could be labeled as Klon and Drive 1B could be labeled as Screamer. This would make it a lot easier to have toggle switches between channels, to show what they've actually set to.
  • Visible defaults. If I'm playing around with the brightcap or the input EQ, I would find it very helpful to have a visible representation of what the default value is if I want to return a value to its default.
A complete wet dream would be for the Axe Fx family to have an API. Lets say there was 16 custom blocks where it would be possible to load blocks from 3rd parties, similar to custom cab IRs. Using the API, other companies such as Strymon or Electro Harmonix could create and sell blocks for the Axe Fx that we could then buy, load and use. That would mean that Strymon or EH would not have to give up their properietary algorithms but we would still get access to them without using external pedals.

How would you propose fitting a larger screen in a smaller chassis?

Unless it was really wide, which I don't think would be great.
I was trying to figure out if this was a troll or not. Because the 2U is a solid idea that has a ton of merit. Everyone is always trying to carry less gear, one of the main benefits of modelers. Saving another rack space would be huge. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'd dig a 1U Axe.
But yeah, more knobs and a bigger screen, as well? Maybe a slide out, rotatable screen and really tiny knobs? lol

Yeah, like car stereo displays that "pop out" when they turn on :)

I would also be open to a second screen. Get rid of the logo and analog meters I rarely need after presets are built and put a screen there that could be adaptive - level meters, a strobe tuner, more parameters in real time, or whatever made sense for the mode you were in.

I also wouldn't hate a little USB-C port ON THE FRONT! : )

The only improvements I can think of would be integrated Bluetooth for iOS editing and lower noise in 2U format

Three words: two rack space

Even those of us who are not looking for a compact floor unit would really like to get away from the big huge racks reminiscent of the first generations of rack gear and processors. I couldn't care less for color screens, touch screens, and other younger-generation gameboy UI. I'm still using my trusty old II XL because the three-space form factor of the III was a deal-breaker for me. But I do wish I could benefit from all the technology that went into the III - just not at any cost, and 3-space is a killer.

There’s been a lot of talk about what Fractal’s next gen product will be, but I don’t really understand what could be added to the AxeIV, FM3, and FM9 next-gen that isn’t already on those units now. The only thing I can think of is capturing, but that’s not really Fractal’s cup of tea. I do wish tone match was added to the FM3 and FM9, but I don’t think that will ever happen.
What could be added? Easy.. it could serve you up a cold beer, or even a nice cup of tea.. to help with the hours of endless tweaking you're going to do next :grinning:

Perhaps they could allow tablets to mirror the smaller screen for those of us who are sight-challenged. I slip that into my backpack, and the 1U or 2U Axe-IV is good to go.
Postive shrinkflation!

Oh god,
Please don’t make us wait for axefx 4 for a decent feedbacker block.
On a serious note,
Axe4 needs the long awaited, much maligned yet incredible talent block. Automatically pitch corrects your bends, tightens timing, inserts melody if you’re above the age of 49 (consent depending) and an extendable paddle that emerges from output 2 to kick your ass when you’re not playing well. (Midi controllable by the drummer of course).

Add a time expander. Something that would slow down time -I don't have enough time to explore all the capabilities of the 3, and I'm retired! A time expander would therefore be nice.

Having 1 extra space as a limitation is mind blowing to me.

I personally would love a true dynamic EQ... you can make due with multiband compression, but you can't get as narrow with the Q and it really is different than a multiband comp. Maybe a Nan loader like someone else mentioned already.

Why? If you have other gear to haul, every bit counts. If you have a racked wireless and a power conditioner, you then only need a 4-space rack instead of a six. Less space, less weight.
These things absolutely do make a difference when you're hauling and packing. These considerations are vital when you're on the road.
I have my Axe in a rack with a guitar wireless, a Soundcraft mixer, several IEM wireless units, a router, and a midi interface. I could use any space I can get.
It's the same reason some folks think it's better to have an FM3 instead of an FM9, or think it's better to haul an AXE-III than a Fender Twin.

POLYPHONIC pitch shifter
The Pitch block is already polyphonic...

Are you talking about processing each string independently? Because that isn't feasible without a special pickup at (and support for that on the Axe Fx).

Or maybe you mean the Synth block?
