What expression pedal to buy?

For me, just one type of pedal doesn't work. I need a long travel (I use a modded Ernie Ball VP JR) for things like volume swells, univibe speed etc, and then I need a traditional Crybaby/Vox style wah (which I like spring loaded) because the shorter travel works better for fast quacky wah work. Then I use a third pedal, which really isn't a pedal, but a momentary piano style sustain pedal, which depending on the preset and the dampening, will go from full on/off over a given interval of time, and/or range. Sometimes for wah/filter type stuff, staccato effects etc I like just tapping/holding this pedal. I can go from say 0-50% with a tap, and if I tap and hold a half second I can go 0-100%, depending how its set. Opens up some creative options for smooth linear sweeps and such I can't do with moving a normal pedal. Also is cheap and compact.

I had the EV-1 and its great, but found it was a little big for me, and the travel is nice and wide, so great for swells etc, but way too much physical range for a fast quacky wah workout. Likewise, for pitch/whammy effects I enjoy the spring feedback and how it goes back to pitch when I let up my foot.

Not to knock the EV-1, but for what I paid for mine, I bought a Mission EP-1 spring loaded as a B stock, thus cheaper price, and 2 JPVr's which has scratchy pots off Ebay. Put new linear taper pots into the VPJr's, painted them black, and they, paired with my EP-1 and sustain pedal give me all the more control I could ever desire, and for a pretty minimal price.

You can program scenes up with one effect on, on off, and use the same pedal for both, and that works, but I personally just like minimizing that need, less to remember. I like my EP-1 always being a wah, unless its a special patch and its set for whammy. I like another being a uni-vibe speed, so then I can always control that, or step on the wah.

Sometimes less is more, but I think when it comes to direct expression control, more isn't just more, but options and ease of use

Chicago Music Store sells the Moog Ep-3 for $40 on Reverb.com with free shipping... I bought one and it works great with the Ax8.

I use two Dunlop DVP4 pedals, the mini-volume pedal, for volume and wah. I can fit two stacked on top of each other in my Kontroller bag next to the AX8. They are small, but the sweep seems just fine, just had to tighten up the pedals a little (to my personal taste) but they include the wrench for that. They calibrated up just fine. They also take up less room on stage as well.

BTW, I use two 1.5 ft Monoprice right angle TRS to right angle TRS cables with them. It seems that TRS cables with right angle plugs on both ends are tough to find. And the Monoprice cables seem really well made.

VP JR 250K (FOR PASSIVE ELECTRONICS)
The Ernie Ball VP Jr 250k provides all the same great features as our original volume pedal while reducing your footprint by 22%. The VP 250k Jr is perfectly voiced for passive signals and features a compact, rugged design consisting of a billet aluminum housing that is virtually indestructible. Directly behind the input jack under the footplate is a micro taper switch which provides the user two distinct volume swell rates.

I am going to ask this question here, as opposed to starting a whole new thread.....

Assuming use with the AX8, how does the EV-1 pedal get powered? Is it powered from the AX8 board (via the TRS cable), or does it use a wall wart.....or have a battery inside of it, etc? I just checked the EV-1 manual on-line, but power supply is not mentioned.

Have to give mad stupid props to the Dunlop Volume X after some use. Smooth as glass, adjustable, looks sexy, connections on top, polarity switch inside (for us RJM users), bottom is solid so you can velcro easily (no rubber feet removal or riser needed like Mission).

No need to be powered. It's passive and works perfect !
