What are your backup plans if you accidentally drop a plectrum during a performance or solo?

As those dunlops I use are semi-transparent there's no other solution than pick another from the tiny metal box I keep close. On the mean time fingers and thumb will do the job.

Drops the plectrum, transitions to finger picking, and then picks up a new plectrum off the mic stand and continues mid solo to the beat of the drummer. Lead vocalist looks puzzled like did something happen here? Hammet is smooth as silk.

Risk management is as much about prevention as it is about remedy. To reduce the risk of dropping, or even rotating, I drill a line of holes in all my plectrums. (I would post a picture, but forum software gives me a security error).

If I drop a plectrum then I use my fingers until I can pick up a fresh one from my pedal board.

He handles it and continues solo to the bands backing smooth as grace.

As you can see, dropping a pick is a pretty inconsequential thing. Definitely not something one would lose a job over. I have a pick holder on my mic stand similar to what he uses, so it only takes a second or two to grab a new one.

Learning to play with your fingers instead of a pick when in a bind is a skill to be appreciated in the moment.

as someone else mentioned, a little showmanship goes a long way. Smiling at the crowd when you goof is probably more fun to the audience than any other thing you could do to cover it up.

Live music is fun because of the realities that do not exist in the studio.

I had a couple fun-tak strips with a mix of promo picks and "play" picks on each guitar as well as a pick holder strip on the mic stand.

I'm a trained classical guitarist, so they're built in. (Yes, fine, I wish I could play like Mancuso!)

That being said, I don't drop picks anymore. I have some great recommendations that aren't just BlueChip, though I have used mine for a good 10 years now.

What are your picking recommendations besides BlueChip?
