I am using the FM9 as a Post FX processor (as well as Midi controller) for My IR-J or X88IR Pre-Amp.
I am going straight out of the Pre-amp (with IRs) into input 3 and then out to Output 1 or 2 of the FM9.
I like this setup because I can feed FOH output 2 and then I can use output 1 to my FRFR on stage and adjust volume accordingly.
The issue I am having is the signal coming in to the FM9 from either pre-amp is very hot. I have the output volume on either pre-amp set to only 9 or 10 O'clock and the incoming signal into the FM9 (and output 1 and 2) is already close to 80% on the VU meters on the display on the unit.
when I look at the preset leveler meter on FM9 edit, the signal has already peaked (way over +10db)
This is not giving me a lot of headroom and the output volume knobs on the FM9 are literally sitting at 8 or 9 O'clock and Im close to clipping the outputs.
The preset is levelled at 0, all effects are levelled at 0. I have adjusted the input 3 trim down to 8% but it doesn't really make much difference.
Is there a best practice for this to maintain best quality signal?
Do I lower the preset level (below 0) and increase pre-amp volume? or do I just run the Pre-amp volume as low as possible?
It just feels like something isn't right because if I run either Pre-amp direct out (bypassing the FM9) into an FRFR or Mixer, or Interface I am finding that the volume of the pre-amp needs to be up around 2-3 O'clock to give me a decent level.
It seems like the FM9 has it's own pre-amp.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You.
