Variax with Axe-Fx?

Does anyone know: Is it possible to use only the pickup modelling & tuning variations of the Variax and feed that into the Axe for amp and cab modelling?

If so, can you send midi to the Variax for pickup and tuning changes?

YES..

NO......unless perhaps, if you have a Helix or some other Variax- friendly hardware, but wouldn’t be easy, I think....but plugging the variax via 1/4” directly into the Axe will allow you to use the onboard modelings , but the Variax cord is proprietary....

The VDI connection is just a digital audio stream on a couple of conductors and a classic midi connection on the other conductors, it is pretty easy to build a break-out box and use a standard din cable for midi.

Edit: after reading again that discussion I think that, with the latest version of the firmware, the variax needs to receive a specific sysex message to enable its midi communication.
Read all the thread.

WOW I'm kind of excited now. I just picked up a used JTV-59 the other day. Having tons of fun making killer acoustic presets. Been wanting a piezo guitar but didn't want to go to the bother of installing in a guitar I already owned. Plus the Variax has guitar sims and tuning that a piezo setup does not. This VGuitar forum info looks pretty promising for switching guitar sims as well as tunings via midi. They even have info for doing it wirelessly via bluetooth midi. Looks like I will be playing 70% of our songs on this.

the variax models a guitar. the axe uses a guitar signal to make amp tones.

it will work.

Funny seeing the Variax for years and never really looking into it I thought you needed a POD or HD or whatever to use it. Didnt realize all the modeling was in the guitar. Only draw back on these things is buying a battery. Almost impossible to locate one. I just bit the bullet and bought 3 off Reverb. Only one's anyone could actually put there hands on.
