The Humbler...

Yeah, Danny was scary good and in so many ways. I went to school at UVA in the late 70s and got to see him several times in that era, mostly in tiny places in Charlottesville and once in his club in DC. Got to see him using the Magic Dingus Box. Sat maybe 10 feet in front of him at a couple of shows. I think I was scarred for life. What he was doing was so incomprehensible that it was like magic. I loved his playing in that era more than when he got more famous. When he was more famous he had to put it all in a more easily packaged form and he lost a bit of the careening on the edge quality to his shows. Heard him one night when he was really feeling bluesy and I've never heard anything recorded that reflected just how deeply into that world he could go. Loved when Evan Johns was in the band. They made a great guitar pair and Evan had the energy to keep up with Danny.

A huge loss to the music world when he left us. One of the (somewhat unsung) greats.
