T808 vs Shimmer Drive

yek

Fractal Super Friend
The coveted original TS-808. Up there with the most sought-after vintage ODs.

FAS has modeled it. But it takes up quite a bit of CPU, as all diode-based models do.
Often used as a boost, with Drive at 0, Tone around 6, Level around 9.

Now, add a 2nd Drive block, select the Shimmer Drive type, set Drive at 0.9, Tone at 4.25, Level at 7.25.

Configure two scenes, where one has just the T808 engaged, and the other has only the Shimmer engaged.

Compare. Be amazed. Replace the T808 with the Shimmer in your presets and you gain a bit of precious CPU. *

* Especially with the FM3, but it applies to the FM9 and III as well, of course.

I've never been a TS-808 fan, but lately I've been digging the Shimmer as an input boost in the amp block, much to my surprise. In the right situation it's great.

Good tip that I'll try soon. Thanks!
I tried to use the TS in the FM3 for a recording this weekend and I guess I've just never been impressed with any TS pedal or modeler.

Thank you for this tip. I had not yet tried the Shimmer Drive. Now I am very pleased that it comes through nicely in the upper mids and also adds a tablespoon to the overdrive sound. Maybe now I miss the Barber Direct Drive a little less ;-)

Great tip Yek! I implemented this on some presets to sub the Shimmer in for the TS-808. It definitely lines up close enough for live work and saves some CPU. Thanks!

Helpful hint: you can set up the Drive 1 hold function on the Effects layout to toggle between two drive types on the FC-Edit page in FM3 Edit (or from the front panel, I did it in FM3 Edit), i.e. in a given preset, set up drive A as TS808 and drive B as Shimmer Drive, and then configure the hold function to toggle between A and B. I find this to be very useful when I want to use different drives on the fly in real time. I've been using it with Esoteric RCB and Klone Chiron and they work out very well for me. But, I must say, I do really like the TS808 drive with my BFSR preset...

Change the Mini-Display Label for the Tap function to "Long Name +Channel" to get an indicator of the current channel, plus it acts as a reminder that the Hold function is enabled.

I use something similar for my Rotary block, and set the Hold Mini-Display Label to "Custom" and use "Slo/Fst/Bk" as a reminder of their order. For those two drives I'd use something like "Klon/Shimr".

What he said!!:D
I can tell which one is active by the character of the boost, but that label idea is a good idea...
