Synyster Gates/New Avenged Sevenfold

Fractal Fanatic
Their new album has been out for a week or two and I’m loving it as they took a pretty big left turn into prog waters with the new album. Gates himself hasn’t done much for interviews yet, but I’ve heard the singer say in 2-3 different interviews that “Syn really went hard on programming sounds in the Fractal” when discussing how they went about coming up with the sounds on this album as there’s plenty of unorthodox sections/sounds. A lot of stuff I figured was a synth I’m seeing is actually Gates going apeshit with the AxeFX.

@Cooper Carter, did you help out with any of this stuff? I’d imagine the programming for the tour was pretty intense. He’s got 3 EV-1’s onstage and I’m guessing has the whole set/switching MIDI’d up.

Start this vid at 2:50 for one particular solo I assumed was a keyboard on the album-

There’s some other stuff he’s doing where it sounds like multiple violins playing, I can’t remember what song it was but in the live vid it ended with him playing solo and just a bunch of craziness that sounded nothing like a guitar. Would love to hear more detail about how he used the AxeFX and coming up with some pretty gnarly sounds.

I posted a similar question a month or so back and got crickets. My guess is they will be monetized and put on his site eventually.

We'll be doing a full tone/rig tour video with Syn soon! ;)

Ive been trying, about 5 listens, not finding anything I want to hear again yet. I think a headphone listen is next...

This one was an automatic love for me, not so much because of the music itself, I had a few head scratching moments, but just the balls of the band to release an album like that when they could just release City of Evil PT II and bank on it. But like any prog album, after repeated listens I ended up picking up on different things each time around and eventually had a mess of ear worms floating in my head. I don’t dig all their output, but I’m loving the shit out of this album.

This album took a few listens for me to “get it” and understand the message. Now I absolutely love it. I find Cosmic to be unbelievably powerful. My wife cried during that song on her first listen, and I have several times. Just incredible stuff that I rarely experience from music.

There is, but this was a bit different. I’ll try to find the clip later tonight but he was pretty much standing still, not playing and it sounded like 2-3 different violins playing different parts.
Pretty sure that's just a recording/sample being played of violins from the original track. On their podcast they talk a bit about the recording of those parts and working with the other musicians.

Kind of off topic but not really: am I missing something about trying to download synesters GOT presets? I don’t see any for the axe fx 3. Also for some reason, the hellwind IR isn’t loadable into my axe fx. Can someone send me a link to where to download his presets or post them here for an idiot like me?

Yeah I like when bands try stuff too, just have to have a song in there somewhere. Its ok, sometimes artists have to do one for themselves, I thought that was The Stage, but maybe its really this one. Im 8 listens in now, and Im stubborn. I have albums I listened to 20 times or more before I liked, so I havent quit just yet 😅

I dont really consider this prog, more of a modern metal vibe imo.

My fav prog album is Pain of Salvations "BE". If people havent heard that album, its a masterpiece 🤘

Absolutely love that one. When it gets calm and then all the weird, disturbing sounds start coming in…..that stuff evokes an actual feeling in my gut!

You’d have to see the video, it’s just him in the front of the stage playing, it’s the only sound you hear, he stops and the delays or whatever is going on continues, but it’s still the same sound he was using. It’s like a tiny solo spot at the end of a song.

So it wasn't this song?

Nope.

Go to the 15:00 mark in this vid-

I hear different things depending on the speakers I’m on; I could hear the violin sounds better on my entertainment system than I can on my ipad that I’m on now, maybe there’s a track underneath whatever sound he’s using, hard to tell with not great audio and an Ipad speaker!

Incredible album, and I'm really glad to see them follow up The Stage with such a strong offering. They keep reinventing themselves in new and interesting ways.
