Struggling with Dynacabs

I've been using 3rd party cab IRs since I got an ax3 a few years ago. Most of them are york audio with some own hammer and chop tone IRs. I've been trying to get a dynacab to sound similar to various 3rd party IRs, and, I suck at it I guess. The sound I want doesn't even come close. I've tried variations of mic distance and placement, mic types, to no avail.

As an example, I've gotten a pretty decent representation of Eric Johnson's A Via Musicom tones, really based on a rig rundown from a few years back he did. Eric talks about for his lead, using a late 60's head, and by looking at the video, it appears to be a 1987x model, with an added 4 knob tube driver for his signature tone. This would include tape overdrive as part of the chain along with some more delay after.

In the video, he says the head runs through a marshall 1980's cab with 80 watt speakers, which would more than likely be the 2x12 80 lead dynacab. Well, its nasally, and I hate it. I've been using a combo of york M25 cabs, with a shurev57 and a 121 mice pair at the moment.

I can't seem to even get the recto cabs to come our right. Any pointers?

The only "secret" of DynaCabs is literally having the right cab, or one that sounds close, and choosing the mic(s)/position(s) that work for you. They're extremely accurate. If a DynaCab isn't working, user cabs and factory cabs remain extremely versatile!
We'e got almost 50 DynaCabs available now, with more on the way.

PS: For the particular tone you're after, talk to @Cooper Carter

I found this post. It might not be related to the topic, but do you plan to add even more Dynacabs to FM3 besides the ones added in the last update?I'm dying for a matchless DC30 Dynacab.

Iirc theres other packs for sale, probably worth checking there periodically.

For M25’s try the 112 option the Divided by
13 CJ cab. Or the 412 GB version Friedman cab. The 412 Stealth used EVH branded greenback ish speakers. Other options are the Lerxst which the wiki says are M25’s. V30’s mixed with Greenbacks is good. The Hot Kitty is a 112 V30. Pair the Kitty ribbon with the CJ on one of the dynamics. For a long time I didn’t get along with Dynacabs and now that’s mostly what I use. If you can’t get something you like and are happy with your IR’s then you’re good.

I don’t know what it is with the Dynacabs. They’re just IR’s shot with a robot positioner and the graphical user interface to pick through them. They do sound different in some way. My early attempts sounded too bright, harsh, thin, nasally etc. Then one day I was trying the Stealth cabs and adjusting the amp to match the cab and it just worked. I’ve since moved on from the Stealth cabs to mostly single 12’s which sound more focused and less boomy to me. In the end legacy or Dynacab they are just IR’s. Either is fine.

Use what works for you! I have been using the same classic IR in the ax-8, axe fx II XL, fm3. It's the ir tone I'm comfortable with and I could not find that comfort with the new dyna cab
IR platform either.
