Strat and a Dumble - time for a lil' noodlin'

So I hadn't played my strat much over the last two years, and I was considering selling it. Well, I took it out and thought "I bet if I put some 11s on this broad she'd sing like you wouldn't believe". So I took it down and got it set up and man alive, am I glad I decided to keep it. It's got a Macassar ebony neck and fretboard, and they aren't exactly easy to find anymore. I dialed up a Dumble patch and gave her a whirl. This is the first time I've ever touched the Dumble, and my heavens I know what I was missing now. I am not what you'd call a "lead guitarist" but here you go anyway!

Chain is as follows:

Tube Drive - ODS-100 Clean - Stereo Cab (OH V30 Beta and OH Greenback 4x12s) - a little stereo tape delay - a little plate reverb

Hope you enjoyed it! I know I did! :pride:

Quote: "Now that's what I'm talking about!" Nice TONE, sounds good!

Superb sound. I dig this amp. Where can I find these cabs?

The link to the Ownhammer beta can be found by searching around on the forum. However, it is my understanding that the actual speaker will be coming out over the next 2-3 weeks (Chinese Vintage 30 in Bogner cab). Go to ownhammer.com if you want to find the Greenback. Yeah, the V2 IRs are expensive, but in my opinion are totally worth it. I know lots of guys who've found a great sound with Redwires or the stock cabs, but ever since I've gone over to the Ownhammer cabs I'm just way, way, WAY happier with my Axe-fx II preset tones.

Thanks Kriig! I have to compensate for my total lack of chops somehow! :shock

Seriously I feel so dumb for having not checked out the Dumble sims before. The ODS-100 Clean is very quickly becoming one of my favorite clean amps in the Axe-II.

Nice. I think I'm in a similar boat to you (not a lead player). Although I can't imagine NOT using a strat with the AFX! LOL I love the tones I get out of it with mine. Humbuckers push some of the presets so they distort more than you like and might lead to the quick impression that it's a dirty tone. Whereas when you try with a singlecoil, they have a nice clean just by rolling off the volume a touch and dirty up nice with more volume or a little gain.

Also, it's a bit more severe, but I'd always go for replacing pups vs getting rid of an axe. Just too hard to come up with the scratch to replace 'em :D

As for the cabs, Clark Kent has a couple nice ones as well that are free - here are a bunch of IRs that I've found in the forum and around:

Dude thanks for all the links! I'm going to DL the Port City for sure. I think the biggest thing limiting this strat was that I was playing 9s on it when I was teaching up to 8 hours a day. It's got a SD JB in the bridge, and yeah, you have to be careful with the presets to not drive the amps too hard. However, I am able to find ways around it when I'm using my BKP Painkillers in my 7. Just have to think ahead is all. I personally love humbucker tone for cleans, but it's just different. I use the strat mainly in the middle position to the neck position if I'm looking for super cleans. One day I'd like to get another strat with single coils in it though, because I do love the tones available from them. Cheers!!!

Shucks guys! Thanks! :redface-new:

If only I could play like John Mayer, I'd be all set. I was surprised at how awesome this amp sounded right from the reset, and the true cleans do wonderful things. There is something about putting the right dialed-in drive pedal in front of the clean though that just makes me smile. Fractal did a great job with this amp. Stoked.

I've gotten a lot of compliments on this patch, and as such I've decided to upload the patch without the cabs (as one of the choices is a purchased cab from Ownhammer), but the recipe is super simple so give this a shot and see what happens:

Stereo Cab with both cabs set to 0 balance
OH Beta SM57 USA Modern 5
OH 412 Bog 12M-RI SM57 Mod 6

Just knock back the Beta cab by 2 db so that it's contributing a little less to the overall tone, and increase motor drive to 3.08, and you will have my exact settings. I would not be surprised if your guitar sounds loads different from mine with this patch though - the guitar really is a unique strat in how warm it is, even though it's percussive and chimey like a strat should be. It's got a SD JB in the bridge. The middle and neck pickups are Texas Specials from Fender's shop. As you can see though, there's not a whole lot that's very complicated about the patch. The biggest things to push the tone of the amp/cab interaction (for me anyway) are messing around with thunk (amp control) and motor drive (cab control), which I seem to find a sweet spot with my guitars anywhere from 3-5 on both (sometimes more on the thunk if I'm trying to simulate a seriously loud amp). Let me know how this works out for you! :ugeek
