OK...it was phase cancelling, so I just used the main side of the Y cable as a single out. Seems to be working, but curious as to why a single instrument cable wouldn’t ‍

sounds like the cable doesn't work. it should work exactly the same way, and is preferred. try a different cable.

I tried two different standard instrument cables. Possible issue with my AX8? The single XLR (with the left side disconnected) works perfectly.

you're certain you're using Output 1 1/4" jack?
