Solidstate metal amps - trying a different approach to get those tones

Paul Bradshaw

Thought I'd post this here as there's more traction and maybe get some more responses and ideas on this
preset attached below, did this on my FM3 but will load fine in FM9/AXEFX3

some of those oldschool solidstate amps/hybrids had some really cool tones in them while those models don't exist in the Fractal for now

So by using the Drive block and the Shredmaster model in the particular and a cab along with some EQ/MBCompressor to get that vibe/feel of those solid state amps into a cab

just wondering if others had tried this sort of thing or maybe other ideas on this?

thanks,

Im guessing talking Randall, Ampeg and Marshall mostly (amott sig, VH140C, Vs8100)?
yeah , that's definitely the ballpark , the vs8100 given the Shredmaster voicing is the 'easiest' perhaps to get towards given the contour setting

not sure how the others would be setup, but maybe the cocktail is getting the feel/response right with the drive block and then getting the EQ right

thanks for the feedback 🙏 yeah it's quite a specific tone in feel/response, i get struck with nostalgia when playing through it but couldn't really apply it to my usual heavy tones that i go for

Here is an example of the tone straight from the Axe Fx. This is the intro of "Symbolic" by Death, which is one of the staple Valvestate tones out there. You can compare to that track but I didn't do any real mixing. I only used the Amp, Cab and PEQ block, plus chorus for the middle track.

Would you be willing to share the preset? Sounds great.

The preset itself is super simple, you can create it on your end pretty easy. Its mostly just the IR and EQ + the power amp being off. Its either a york audio 1960a IR or a custom one, can't exactly remember from the file name alone. Amp settings are G: 10, B: 9, M: 3, T: 6, P: 10.

Guitar also is huge on any Marshall style amps like this, if you dont have a super high output humbucker (sh-6, x2n, jb, etc.) I would put a mild overdrive in front of it.

Also I didn't use it for this preset but for a lot of those old Morrisound tones I think the room sound is as much a signature as the huge scooped eq is. Morrisound's live room was something like a 25ft square space with hardwood floors so you get a lot of floor reflections. Can try and match it with the room level in the cab block or a reverb.
