Setting Preset Levels

I spent last night adjusting levels across my new FW18 presets (using the VU meters) and something occurred to me. Generally my presets feature a fairly straightfoward single amp set up and as such I adjust the level in the amp block. However on a couple of presets where I am using two cabs and part of the key to the sound is different levels for each cab. In these cases I either had a GEQ at the end of the chain and adjusted the level there or I adjusted the level at the Output end of the preset. I seemed to get my desired result but my thought was is there a "right" or "preferable" point at which to adjust the level? Thanks.

If you have 2 cab blocks ,bring the cab block output down 6db on both , it should be the same as a single block volume wise .

Doesn't each cab add about 6db? In which case you should bring each one down 3db to equal the same volume as one by itself. I could be wrong and each one adds 12db, but I thought I had read that it was 6.
