Hey Alex,

That is a great question... I think tone starts in you head and as we know is executed by the fingers, then another journey begins; Guitar, pedals, amp, cab, mic, pre-amp, etc.. different guitars make me play differently; tele, strat, LP, Ibanez with 24fret and a floyd rose. But over all I feel that I can get my tone from quality gear..

So to answer your question, NO I don't think you need one of those guitars, not that they don't make great instruments, I think that you should be able to get great tones in the style of Satch, Vai, EVH, etc on your LP. Obviously the scale length is shorter is a big factor as to why a LP sounds different that a Strat...
