Fractal Fanatic
I'm more of a casual fan (I find the singer tolerable at best) but a friend was going so I figured I'd join him since it was a small club show at the Newport here in Columbus and I have never seen them before.

Interesting band. Relentless... they could use a little more pacing in the setlist to break up the double-kick pummeling. Incredible musicianship. The exchange of solos between the musicians after "Pull me Under" was nothing short of breathtaking. And I was happy that they did not include the over-indulgent individual drum solo/guitar solo/keyboard solo segments in the show (as if their music isn't over-indulgent enough already!) Definitely glad I went and I would probably go see them again.

Petrucci's amps were not mic'd. Does anyone know what he's running live?

was there too... about 3 people back. on petrucciforum.com his tech goes over all his stuff. he basically has an A and a B rig. Both with mark V's. the A rig has all tc stuff, the b rig (on maiden tour now) has the axefx and a few mark V's. They have no stage volume except drums, the real stuff is behind the fake stuff up front for show.

Great concert, got real tired of standing by the end, was out in line for 3 hours in the sun. My only problem with them is the spitting from Mike, i dont understand it, and it's just a gnarly habit i guess. I did get a drumstick, the one he dropped in the first song and LaBrie threw out when he came back in for his part.

Those amps and cabs are cardboard cutouts, real rig is behind them.

Hey, I saw you get that drum stick. I was to your left, but we were up off the floor in front of the speakers. I was back a few people so I had a good angle to see the band, but the stacks blocked my view of the keyboards.

Anyway, it renewed my interest in checking out some more of their stuff. I have a couple of the earlier CD's (Images and Words, Falling into Infinity) but some of the later stuff that I have heard (Train of Thought) just doesn't do it for me. Too much like Metallica and not enough keyboards/variety for me.

I'll have to check out petrucciforum.com.

That's his current B-rig so he's using the Mark V because the Axe-Fx can't nail that tone and everything else can be done with that Axe-Fx. Just joking... well... not completely. Anyways I'm sure Petrucci uses the Axe-Fx for his live effects. Petrucci's amps sure as hell are miced. He's got 20 cabs on stage so he can feel the low end in his behind and get feedback etc. when he's playing and those two amps in the rig, well they go behind the stage and they sure are miced. :) Sorry Axe-Fx but this is reality. You are in a rig just for effects...

I felt exactly the same way about LaBrie until I found out he ruptured his vocal chords right before the Falling Into Infinity tour. He was never the same after that.

I urge anyone who doesn't care for his singing check out this live clip from 2:00 to 4:30. I think it's amazing. It still may not be your cup of tea, but the guy had some serious chops.

He's also got buttkickers (sub woofer motors) in those diamond plate footrests of his.

Maddy does a real good job explaining his rig on the Petrucci forum for anyone interested. Also does a great job answering questions as the thread develops. I must say, Very cool.

I saw them in Calgary, fucking RULED. I love the shorter setlist in a way because they just played the songs, no wankfests and not much banter etc. The sound / playing / songs where just awesome, proved why they are one of the greats.

Stage cabs were all fake cardboard cutouts the last 2 times I saw them.Real cab was behind the cutouts turn backwards.

I guess it's different each time. When he first got the Mark Vs he had multiple powered heads all on top of those cabs that are facing the crowd. I also remember Portnoy showing his drum setup and he had a tent behind Petruccis cabs and the cabs were all unplugged. Anyways they are mostly for show. Those two cabs behind the stage create the FOH tone.

Yeah the last 2 x I saw them he had several fake MkVs (I think one may have been real) on top of several fake 4x12s.

You can see them in this youtube video:

I didn't know that. I'll listen to his singing in a different light now.

No wonder he ruptured a vocal chord!

Thanks for the info in this thread. I'll pick up a couple more CD's this week.

LaBrie's vocal chord issues were actually a result of vomiting from nasty food poisoning. I feel really bad for the guy to have had that happen to him.

Although it has taken years, I think things have really improved a lot. When I saw Dream Theater toward the end of last year his singing was really great. I hope he's made a full recovery.

A couple of corrections:

- He ruptured his vocal cords right before the Awake tour, not the tour for FII.

- The vocals on "Live At The Marquee" (which is what the clip you posted is) were overdubbed by Labrie after the fact.

Here's a couple of rare live clips from around the same time though (92) where he sounds amazing:

Thanks Shredi. I knew it was before Awake, not sure why I had a brain fart.

AS for the vocals in Marquee being overdubbed later, I didn't know that. They sound consistent with bootlegs from the period. I'd be interested in any sources of this info you could provide.

Thanks

I just did a quick google search and found this comment (which includes a quote from DT drummer Mike Portnoy) on last.fm about the overdubbing:

If you've read your Lifting Shadows's, you should be well aware that James' vocals sound so great here because they were overdubbed to the actual live material in a studio :b Here's an excerpt: ”To be honest, James ended up re-doing his vocals for that,” Mike confesses. ”So I always wondered if we should have named it 'Dream Theater Live At The Marquee But With James LaBrie Live At Bear Tracks'!” Nevertheless, the recording is great and James sounds great as always. Just that if his vocals were actually live vocals on this one, they might not sound THAT clear
