Recommend me headphones amp and cabinet?

Hey guys. I recently ordered an axe fX 3 and I need headphones to at least hear it, and I'm guessing an amp and cabinet to use it further. Can you guys make me any recommendations for this stuff? Thanks.

These are covered in many threads.

It'd help if you clarify "amp" and "cabinet". Active FRFR, passive, or a regular guitar cabinet containing one or more FRFR speakers? A regular guitar amp, a solid-state "flat" amp, or tube-power-amp?

How much do you want to spend?

How big do you want the amp and cabinet, wattage-wise? Do you intend to use them on stage or at home? If on stage, how big of a stage and in what size venues? What styles of music?

Ok, thanks for an in depth response.

I'm just looking for headphones for now to get a good sound through them while I practice alone, but if I wanted to upgrade to amp/cabinet (it requires both to function, correct?), how much would I need to spend to get a solid prog metal sound?

At this point it would just be for practicing alone, but if I wanted to use it for band practice or playing at small venues, what then?

I would say my budget for amp and cabinet would be 2k, but having realized that I need the axe fX 3 to get a good sound, and it is quite pricey, I'm aware that to get a good heavy sound I might need a bigger budget.

Obviously saving money is nice because at this point I guess I'll state again, I'm mostly practicing alone, but it would be nice to have band practice/small gig capability.

Thanks.

As @Greg Ferguson said up front, all of these questions have been covered many times in many threads.

You can use your earbud apple things or you could use Grados or you could use AKGs.
Who cares? You're going to simply make your presets sound good on whatever set you choose.

Whether or not they translate to other phones etc...is another thing. But you're just practicing so whatever. It's gonna sound good in the headphones.

Gigs? Go direct and use the headphones for your monitor. Done. Enjoy your Axe 3. I know you will.

Hey and welcome, I'd be glad to help - I use Sony MDR-7506 headphones and PreSonus Eris E3.5 Studio Monitors they are each around $100 and serve me very well. There are of course better and more expensive options, but for my use case (untreated apartment playing) they fit my needs and sound great to me.

Thanks, I'll look into these headphones.

First of all, welcome to the machine!

Members here are more than willing to help and some spend a lot of time on the forum helping as much as they can. However, when subjects have been discussed as many times as these, it's gets a bit 'bothersome' (for lack of a better word) to reply yet again when a forum search would provide the information requested.

If you want to kick it up a notch when playing at home, get some real nice studio monitors.

For gigging or jamming with others, you will probably want to step up to either a power amp and cab set up, or some
FRFR speakers, which normally come with their own built in amps but not always.

I used the Sony MDR-7506 headphones (around $100 on Amazon) with AxeFx for years and thought they were good. Then I bought the Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X Open Back ($259 on Amazon)....so much nicer to my ears. These Beyerdynamics also sound very good listening to music from my phone or computer...unlike the Sony. Other ears may differ....I'm only giving MY OPINION.

Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro headphones, good quality and sounds good, feels also nice.

https://global.beyerdynamic.com/dt-880-pro.html

I have also HB GPA-400 power amp and 212 cab.

https://www.thomann.de/fi/harley_benton_gpa_400.htm

or also Palmer MACHT 402 is nice power amp https://www.palmer-germany.com/en/products/guitar-amplifiers/5188/macht-402?c=2153

If you want more stereo sound out then 212 cab or two separate 12" inch cab.
( I have modified Laney LT212 , modified for stereo also).

Maybe cabs like Palmer Cab 212 X CRM https://www.thomann.de/fi/palmer_cab_212_bx_crm.htm
or cheaper Harley Benton G212 Celestion V30 https://www.thomann.de/fi/harley_benton_g212_vintage.htm or the other one with Greenbackers

Or maybe https://bluguitar.com/en/products/cabinets/twincab or two https://bluguitar.com/en/products/cabinets/nanocab

There is so much choice :D

Hope you find something suits for you

By the way, cheap don't always mean poor quality. Maybe anyway good to check user reviews.
I have also cheap thing and have to say, surprisingly good quality is GPA-400 and that sounds really good.

If you are considering studio monitors, the Kali Audio line is excellent value for the price… especially their IN-8s

Headphones I recommend Sennheiser HD 6xx which are lower priced versions of the highly regarded 650.

Amp and cabinet, depending on how loud you need it, something like an Orange Pedal Baby and 2x12 cab may be a good pick.

I've read the headphones threads. And I owned the BD DT880 Pro model and thought it good, til one side crapped out on me in a little over a year, and I replaced them with AudioTechnica ATH-M50x, which were much better sounding. To me.

But there still could be others that sound even better..., Idk.

But if I was doing it again, since there is NO general consensus in those headphones threads (although I did go with the AT model b/c it kept coming up), I'd read the threads, then pick 6 models and buy them all from somewhere with a good return policy.

Then I'd try them on Factory Presets, as opposed to creating your own, so that you won't dial in your tones to compensate for how the headphones reproduce the tones, and perhaps even give some preference to presets that use amp models of ones you know how they sound. Pick one, send the rest back.

Plus, there's the comfort factor, and whether you want closed, semi-open, or open back, which each have pros and cons of their own.

I will add this: With the semi-open type (of which the 880 I owned was), you may very well hear your guitar acoustically when you use the Virtual Capo in the Pitch Block to change tunings, if you're not turned up enough, volume-wise. I have mild-to-moderate tinnitus, so I don't like to turn up very loud at all. But since the AT phones I now have are closed-back, I can't hear the guitar itself through the air at all, even at very low volume levels, unlike how it was with the DT 880's. (note: that model may be available both ways; I can't recall.)

Good luck in your search! And remember- tones that sound good through headphones at low volumes probably won't sound good at band levels.

Also as a heads up:

Amazon has been running the HD 600 headphones on sale for between $249-299 (normally $349). I got a pair when they dropped to $259 last night.

And Drop dot com has been running the HD 6xx headphones on sale for $199 (normally $239).

Either way, a really good value for a quality flat pair of headphones that should last you decades (assuming you replace the pads/cable if they wear or break).
