pre, compression, eq for bass

I've got excellent rack gear for pre, comp, and eq. And I've got the Fractal AxeFx. I don't see why I'd need to use the Fractal for comp/eq, when I have comp and eq rack units. Wouldn't it make sense to come into the AxeFX from the comp and eq rack units? And if I did that, then wouldn't I need a pre before the comp/eq?

I hear a lot of talk about how you don't need a pre when using the AxeFx, but if I want musical harmonics from my eq and comp, then wouldn't I need to go through that whole chain?
 
There is no reason to drop all your gear and just use Axe FX for everything. If you have gear that you like and enjoy by all means use it...

I would try to dial in the axe fx the sounds that mimic your other gear. If it works out and it sounds the same - cool, if it doesn't - use what you have. It was the experience of many people that they were able to copy all of their sounds of the external gear in the Axe FX itself.

If you decide you prefer to keep using your compressor and EQ you can just put them in the effects loop of the Axe.

The units I'm using don't have 1/4 inch inputs and outputs like that unfortunately. It's XLR. I wish the Fractal Axe had XLR inputs.

The main point I'm getting at though is that I don't think there's any way a digital EQ is going to match up against a studio grade analog EQ. That goes for compression as well. The analog domain has too much natural resonance in terms of harmonics. I'd be surprised if Fractal's algorithms can touch that, but Im curious to hear from others here.

You could say the same about digital vs. analog tube amps.

You can obtain balanced-to-unbalanced adapters inexpensively. [example] With short cable runs, this should not have a noticeable impact on audio quality.

You have an Axe-Fx, yes? If you have the time, try a few configurations and see what it can do.
