Pop when powering off

I got my axe II today with v.2.0 installed and digging it so far, however, when powering off from power conditioner with my Matrix power amp
volume up at live volume I get a scary
sounding pop. It is gone when I turn down power amp volume on the matrix. This was not present with my Ultra. thoughts? Review and video coming.....

I'm tempted to ask you to check which plugs on the power conditioner you used with the Ultra.
I haven't used a power amp before, so I'm not sure if it would be any different, but with powered speakers I *always* turn them off before turning off anything feeding them a signal (or else yes, you get a scary, potentially speaker-damaging pop).

Reason I ask to check which plugs you're using is in case the power conditioner shuts off the power to the plugs in a certain order, as some do for exactly these sorts of reasons.
And to my knowledge, the pop should still happen with the Ultra.

Or... could be something else! :D

To the best of my knowledge turning off any audio gear at volume is asking for trouble. Always turn down first, and ideally power amp should be on last when powering up and off first when powering down. Cheers

The pop when shutting down with v1.5 was scary. It's much better with v2 but still loud enough that you should power everything else down before the shutting down the Axe. I don't recall any significant pop with the Ultra, but I've long been in the habit of shutting power down first. If you are hooked into the house PA you need to have them mute your input before powering up or down.

That forget "mute" at FOH has happened to me....not fun. Hope it gets fixed...and the Volume taper.

I don't think the "pop" will ever be fixed. If it was gonna be fixed, it would have been done in v2.0. As far as ANY audio equipment goes, always turn off your speakers/power amp before turning off whatever's connected to them. Many studio/live devices will make a pop when powering off, it's not just the Axe-FX.

100% agreed.

I have the Axe II and Matrix; 2.0 made the "Pop" much less noticeable but still louder than I want to deal with. I now just turn off the
amp first, then the Axe and no problem.

I was concerned about this too. With my Ultra and SLA-2, this wasn't an issue, just turned them all off at once.

Sounds like most hear it, and with my matrix levels up at band Not bedroom level it is loud and not something I want to occur frequently through my expensive 4x12 cabs. Question is why did this pop up with the II and not the Ultra

Now that I think about it, there was enough of a pop with my Ultra that I winced when accidentally turning it off with the power on to the speakers. Maybe the pop is a preview of the impulse response function, ;)

I've noticed a pop when changing certain presets on my II, which could be an issue if there is no workaround possible.

it was a supposed fix with the 2.0 upgrade so it was a big issue previously. I think the fact that most people just use the unit in their bedroom and not at band volumes is why more don't complain about it.

You shouldn't be turning off gear while it's turned up to stage volume. You will destroy gear that way, whether it's a regular amp or an Axe FX.

Turn it down and power it off in the correct order. Or am I missing something about the problem here?

Cheers.

I think you're wrong in assuming most people just use it in their bedroom, anyone who does gigs should know the proper order of turning things On/Off, it's never been a problem for me and most of my gigs are with very big PA systems, Ya it would be nice if there was no pop's but lot's of pro gear do that, and it shouldn't really be a problem if people mute the channels when turning it On/Off.

Fair enough. I can't comment on why the Ultra didn't do it, but as DigitalTube pointed out a lot of pro gear does this and following simple power up/down procedures should not only avoid it but extend the life of your gear as well. And that can only be a good thing :)

Cheers
