How many actual effects loops can we plug in external devices in the III? I looked at the back of the unit, but it wasn’t quite clear to me.

Can we have more than one Effect loop block in the signal chain?

There's no fx loop, you'll have separate in & out blocks that's much more convenient.

Anyway you could set these up as 3 classical stereo fx loops, or six mono with appropriate panning.
Although it seems only 2 pairs are optimized for unity gain

I don’t follow: the point of mentioning the fact that only 2 pairs are optimized for unity gain means what exactly? That you can’t use pedals in these in/outs?

It just means that by setting the physical out level knobs on the panel at max you will get the same exact level of the guitar output (with no active fx in between of course).
On non-optimized outputs you'll probably have to find the right level by yourself.
