60 (as metallica used) sounds better for cleans than the 85. SA singles, even better cleans.
The clean tones on One do not sound like the neck pickup at all to me, but I could be wrong. But either way, it's a tool with a sound. If the sound fits what you're after, it's a good sound, regardless of the tool used :)

That is because back then they were using 81/85 EMGs, both Krik and James. During Master, Ride, and Kill em all they were using some Seymore Duncan pickups.
 
People can slam on 81’s all they want, fact is a lot of albums people love were made with that pickup.

Yep. They are a predictable and easy to manage in a mix.

Kinda like Steinberger guitars (which often had EMGs). They record consistently well
