Onboard Preamp Usefulness

Hi.

Just a quick one. Given that the input level is a soft knob, and not subject to analogue distortion, is there any usefulness in installing an onboard guitar preamp, such as the EMG PA2? Will this result in just clipping at the input stage?

Louder signals at the input are still louder. The input knob defines how much the signal needs to be amplified to hit the converters. After the converters it gets lowered again by the same amount as it has been amplified before. That's how I understood it. So booster work as they should for a certain range.
