This is how I do it.I just put a mini-drop on the slot and put the string in it. I'd imagine you could also use a short offcut of an old string to do the same.
IIRC, YT instructional videos suggest this is the correct method...I’ve never used the applicator. I string it up. Move each string aside, one at a time putting a very small dab in/on the slot, move the string back in the slot then finish tuning. Then I wipe it all down.
Creative thought process! Will file this tip away for safekeeping...I use disposable tooth flossers to clean out and lube the nut slots. Put a little dab of nut lube on the floss and wipe it down in there for a thin coating. Works great for string trees and saddles too.

Hopefully not too safe keeping. I have things safely tucked away in the ol' cobweb storage unit on top of my neck that will likely not resurface for decades....Creative thought process! Will file this tip away for safekeeping...
Yup. This is what I current use for slot juice. The dental flossers are a neat pro tip I'll remember; they're just not for tennis balls or kiwi anymore...I tried this...

And it seems to be as good as nut sauce. I actually put some of this product back into the syringe.
I try to place the string into the lubricated slot, when it is near proper tension. So that all the lubricant doesn't move out of the slot, as the string is being tuned up.
