noob question

Hi there, I just faced one question I've never asked; I want to do a custom patch bay with xlr in/outs and 1/4" jacks too, so my question is: can I plug the xlr outs of the axe fx in it even tough I am not conecting them to any devise just in the patch bay? is it safe to do this?

Connecting outs, midi and pedals to a patchbay is ok, nothing bad should happen.
Connecting unused ins could cause hum. Could. If hum appears at all depends on the input gain/ amount of amplification and on the qualitiy of cabel, jack, shielding...usually there will be no shield around the cables where they hit the pins of the patchbay. That should be no problem for line level signals but might be a problem for week guitarsignals and high gain or signals from mics.
