I think switching to 3 units was necessary for the increased number of I/O's. Just look at the rear panel. Adding a power amp would just make it even bigger.

I have a sound card with more I/O and it’s 1U. So no, that’s not it.

Why do you want the preamp and power amp to be one unit?

What, like an amplifier, you mean?

Seriously though, a powered version would be great for fly gigs - no relying on there being a head with an FX loop you can plug into.

I'm sure there is plenty of space inside this 3U enclosure. Do you guys remember how nicely 3rd party poweramp add-ons fit inside the toaster chasis? Those poweramps were tiny and sounded excellent. I'm sure there are crazy people who would squeeze small poweramps inside Axe Fx III just to have a backup option, or save one unit of rack space. And I'd fully understand that .
