It's definitely a different beast - a 30" bass tuned E-A-D-G-B-E an octave below standard guitar tuning. I've been curious about a Bass VI for a while now, and plan to use it mostly for some of the goth tones that they are known for and some fuzz bass type stuff. There's a bit of a "what the hell do I play on it?" thing going on, but I look forward to messing around with it and creating some guitar, bass, and hybrid presets for it. So far it plays well and I like the fit and finish on it. Other than a volume not that's slightly off straight up the hardware is good quality. Not a bad instrument at all for the price. I do think it may be wired incorrectly - it seems like the the neck pickup is the one that is reverse-wound since I'm getting hum-cancelling in neck-middle and neck-bridge while I was expecting it in neck-middle and bridge-middle.
