Can't wait to get going on my first Fractal product!

Goal
For the FX8 to replace my entire pedalboard.

Introduction
I've been somewhat active on other music gear and guitar forums for years, but I found a deal on the FX8 that has made it possible for me to get into the Fractal modeling world. I've been extremely impressed by the wealth of knowledge on this forum, as well as the generous and selfless contributions from users when it comes to patches and settings. It truly feels like a collaborative effort here with the goal to optimize Fractal products to their fullest potential, and that makes so much sense to me because by doing that everybody benefits.

Musical Influences and Tendencies
Late 60s to early 70s rock. I've played guitar for over 20 years now, and as a teenager learned by playing through the Beatles catalog. Then on to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, Cream, and the like. I'm sure I'll be chasing Page's MSG live tone for the rest of my life--and happily, I might add! I've actually gotten very into the Stones lately. But I always come back to The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd: my three-cornered touchstone.

Current Set Up
Edwards Page 112 LP / MJT Blackguard Tele / Epiphone Casino Lennon USA LTD -> Wilson Rippah Q Wah -> Red Witch Moon Phaser -> Catalinbread Belle Epoch -> Lumpy's Lemon Drop -> Lumpy's Liquid Lead -> Lumpy's Class A -> Tech 21 Roto Choir -> Keeley 30ms - Tech 21 Trademark 60 4x10.

After years of gear rotation, the Belle Epoch, 30ms, and Roto Choir pedals are the ones that have most satisfied. Once I got the Trademark 60 I found I could get super super super close to the Lumpy's Liquid Lead (Marshall Superlead) and Class A (Supro) and that the feel was better without the pedals.

Flexibility and Non-Commital
I'm really wishy washy on specific tremolo, phaser, and flanger modulation effect types and variations--every week I want this or that or the other, and I simply don't have the $$ or space on the board for everything! That's where the FX8 will come in super handy. I can just "go get it" right inside the box.

Must-Haves
When I got the 30ms pedal it was one of those Ah Ha moments and I knew I'd been looking for that effect for a long, long time (like since I started this whole journey over 20 years ago by playing along to Beatles records). Once I had that effect, I also knew that I'd want to keep it around indefinitely. Thanks again, @iaresee for the thread on this effect!

My other must-haves at near perfect emulation are Rotating Speaker (Leslie) and an Echoplex EP3 tape delay. My Catalinbread Belle Epoch was another of those huge moments for me when it was like Finally! It made a huge difference when playing Zeppelin live style. So I'm really hoping the FX8 with all it's tweakability can get there.

And with that in mind, I've been scouring the forum and sure enough have found some awesome encouragement and killer recommendations for effect settings, blocks, cabling, and more all thanks to members like @yek , @simeon , @iaresee , @Adinfinitum , @Burgs , @DLC86 , @killerburst , @BrickGlass , @javajunkie , @AlGrenadine , @X-Mann , the list goes on!

Next Steps
There are a ton of you members out there that I've already learned a lot from, and since there doesn't seem to be a comprehensive, single destination for FX8 blocks and presets I've just "watched" all the threads and will be going through them as I learn how to implement the FX8. I intend to post FX8 blocks as I develop them for anyone else out there like me who is trying to find ways to get started, and I'll place them in the FX8 Preset Exchange thread.

There can be no compromise for the holy tone!

Welcome aboard McQ7, Fractal Audio Systems & its users are just awesome!

Enjoy the journey & enjoy the amazing FX that the FX8 brings into your world!

I can honestly say that Fractal Audio has changed my playing for the better, sound wise & by providing a great sense of inspiration too.

Congrats on your purchase & peace! X

Wow, this thing!! I've only had the opportunity for about 4 quality hours with the FX8 and I need more! Right away, though, I was able to dial in some great sounding effects. I messed around with the presets as a sort of introduction/learning experience, and it's really easy to get lost in the settings! I mean, it's really easy to simply get to playing, as well, but it was hard not to try to do All The Things At Once!! However, I quickly realized that I wouldn't really accomplish anything that way. I needed a plan. So here it is:

I'm going to attempt to replicate my pedalboard effects, one pedal at a time.

First up was the Keeley 30ms pedal. It has a reverb knob build in, which I'm ignoring since the FX8 has plenty of those. My go-to toggle setting (and the reason why I bought it) is Abbey mode. Time knob from 0 to 30 ms delay, Rate/Depth knob controls modulation. As I mentioned before, @iaresee has a thread on this and his settings make the effect just as inspiring as the Keeley pedal! I haven't had a chance to do a side-by-side, so that's my next step, after which I'll share the block.

After the 30ms, I'll tackle the Leslie / Rotary effect. My golden reference songs for this are "Sun King" from Abbey Road for the slow setting, and "Let it Loose" from Exile on Main Street. Then I'll probably also have a Pink Floyd version of this, as well, which will be tricky since Gilmour usually mixed it with his dry signal. @BrickGlass appears to be on to something, so that's where I'll start.

Then, I'll attempt to get that elusive Jimmy Page live Echoplex EP3 delay using my Catalinbread Belle Epoch as a reference. I haven't even begun to try this, but I expect that the Mono Tape will be quite close.

Congrats on the FX8! I'm new to this unit as well, and can't say enough good things.

I'd be interested in your 30ms block!

I'd be interested in your 30ms block!

Thanks! I'll be sure to share my block later today. I'd go ahead and read about it, too, so you can get an idea on what changes what in case you'd like to tweak it. The settings and screenshots in this thread are spot on, really, and quick to set. I went back and forth and the only difference I can detect is that the Keeley 30ms has more of a constant and detectable pulse to the modulation. This is with the Keeley 30ms pedal in Abbey mode with knobs at noon or just past.

I also have been working on a While My Guitar Gently Weeps block to match the audio in the vid below, but it's not quite there yet. Very close--slow down the LFO and it's almost there. There's a pretty slow sweep on that guitar track. Almost tremolo throb, as well. I get why for years many thought it was a Leslie effect.

For variations in modulation increase the ratio value and mess with the Time setting (0-30 MS or beyond). But the point is that the ADT block can be pretty easily adapted.

<IMHO.My POV>I've done the multi-effects thing before, and I've done the modeling thing before. I can only speak for myself, but I find that it's tempting to use too many effects all the time. The last iteration of my analog board was dirt {Skreddy Screwdriver Mini Deluxe, Barber Trifecta, Catalinbread Karma Suture, EHX Satisfaction, in various combinations} > Analogman ADRX20 Dual Delay > Moog MF Trem > Amp (with spring reverb).

I'm still figuring out how to integrate the FX8 into my playing life. But for me, keeping it simple has paid dividends. With my analog board, I had many fewer choices, and getting from point A to point B often involved too many toe taps to be practical. So just using the FX8 to simplify switching has been a huge benefit for me. But as far as blocks go, I'm really just using a handful of custom dirt blocks involving mostly the Bender Fuzz (gets very close to my old Trifecta) and Timmy (does the low gain stuff exceptionally well for me, replaces the Karma Suture and Screwdriver), Studio Comp (occasionally), Rotary (occasionally), Trem (occasionally), BBD delay (always a bit, sometimes a lot), London Plate reverb (always a bit, sometimes a lot) and a volume pedal block (ahead of the delay, always on, all the time).

I have two basic "go-to" presets: Cleanish and Dirty. Each one has two scenes. S1 is the basic sound, S2 is for solos. In a handful of circumstances I create custom presets for a particular song. My band covers Jefferson Airplane "Today." I add rotary and take away delay in scene 2 for the bridge/coda. It's awesome having big changes in tone one toe tap away. We also cover songs that originally featured, or that we want to feature electric 12 string (Day Tripper, Eight Miles High, For Your Love), so I have a pitch shift emulation preset for that (sounds very much like a Digitech Mosaic). A couple of others, but fewer than 10 at this point.

I've never been one to try to cop a particular tone exactly. I'm more after something that works for me when I play that song. It's got to both sound and feel right. For that reason, I never play with too clean a tone. I find that cleanish sits in the mix better (it sounds cleaner than it actually is in a mix). I can always back off my pick attack a bit as well.

Plus for me, I find that drastically changing my entire tone for every song feels a bit unnatural for me. Gimicky I suppose is a good way to put it.

Anyway, I guess my macro thought or piece of advice is that there's nothing wrong with simple. Just because we can cop any tone on any record, doesn't mean we have to do that. Even using the FX8 very simply can yield huge benefits in performance.
