MIDI CC for Start/Stop looper

I'm not sure if a bug, or by design, but I'm sending MIDI CC #27 to my AX8 and hoping to replicate the start/stop button when the AX8 is in looper mode.
At the moment, I can stop the looper by sending CC27 - Value 1 and start it by sending CC27 - Value 127, but I'd like to have the single button start or stop depending on if the loop is playing or not.

Does anybody know if that's possible?

Wouldn't that be the Play function in the I/O CTRL list? Could you explain the issue; I may be misunderstanding.

Pretty sure play is cc29. Send value 127 when you want to start it, and value 0 to stop playing

Oh, sorry, didn't read closely enough.

Afaik There is no midi command for "do the opposite of what's currently happening"

This means that if you send "play" and then send "play once" your "play/stop" toggle will send "stop" the next time you hit it. I just make sure to tap "play/stop" again after the "once"
