What do you recommend for a mic for vocal and for amp use? I know Shures are the standard but I'm looking also for others that could be good. Around the $100 is my budget.

Thanks.

Are you talking home studio mic or live mic ?

Live, Shure SM57's are always a good cheap bet... same with a SM58 or a Beta 58 for a little more

I've been using the EV N/D series mics for years... a little hotter level, and a little more tailored to my ears...older versions of the N/d468 for guitar, and the N/D 767 for vocals... ( but the less expensive models are still as good...)

Check 'em out at your local music store.... a/b/c them and choose the one that sounds best to you... they are all in the 100+ range...

So a search for the Little Blondie. A guy at the Gearslutz forum makes these and they're great. It works well with amps and acoustics although it does require phantom power. After going through a series of mics, I've found these to be exactly what I've been looking for. Boutique yet still priced low. I'd post a link but I'm posting from my iPod.

I recently bought a Blue ENcore 200 mic that I really like... (to me) it is a very clear microphone that sounds like it is going though a low end compressor that smooths out the lows very nicely. Only "issue" is that it requires phantom power. Check out this "out of the box" mini review I did of the Blue ENcore 200...

If you watch this video you can get a feel for what it sounds like...

Sorry for the late reply as I haven't been home for a while. Yes, I recorded my acoustic with it and am extremely happy. After using a variety of mics, this is the first one where I used it and thought "wow, that's what I was looking for." The guy who makes it is really cool too. There's a lot of samples of the mic with acoustics as well as amps. Imo, all sounded great. I have the metal cased version which is pretty frikkin' tiny. You won't see it in the mic holder.
There's a wood cased version that he makes as well. It's sound is being compared to with ribbon mics. It costs a bit more ($105 for the metal case, $142 for the wood, at least the last time that I got a quote for them). The guy who makes these is using the proceeds of these mic sales and donating it to a children's hospital. I can't imagine these mics staying at such a low price for long.
Here's a link to a thread talking about it.
