I think this and a few other things can be solved effectively by making the metronome a routable block instead of a global control. It'd be easier to edit and tweak, things like per-patch levels and variations of switching become easy, making the metronome part of some patches but not others, etc.
I figure it'll be a simple switchable routable block that generates the metronome signal, can use local/global/manual tempo sources, has its own level, can use momentary or latching switches, stereo panning control, and maybe even a time signature option. Just imagine X/Y switching between 3/4 and 4/4 clicks.
