I just picked up an FC-6 and wanted to see if this was normal. The usable range for the main LCD contrast starts around 75%. Anything lower and the text disappears, even with the brightness at 100% in a dark room. It's plenty bright at 100% and it's easy enough to find a setting that works for me, but it's strange that 3/4 of the adjustment range is unuseable.
