Led Zeppelin wins major copyright battle for 'Stairway to Heaven'

There are 12 notes in the popular western scale. It allows many combinations and variations, but at some point, things will sound exactly the same. Especially at the rate “songs” are produced these days. A simple minor decending pattern like Stairway will always sound the same. They are known chords and a logical progression. Can no one use this anymore due to Taurus?

A group of musicians/scientists attempted to create and copyright all possible melodies from a subset of notes on a piano. Just to prove how silly this whole thing is. If they now own the copyright to all melodies, no one can write any new music legally. Pretty silly right?
