LED Light Chaser Circuit in a Guitar

I have a clear Lexan guitar that I've always thought it would be cool to put LED's in. I was wondering if anyone here might have a general idea of what would be involved in making a small circuit that would tie into a guitar's output signal (without affecting tone) and cause a set of LED's to flash with varying intensity according to the power of the guitar's signal.

For the record, I'm not looking for any precise details, just curious if any of you smart people out there might know off the top of your head what would be involved in making a project like that work.

Thanks!

First, move to Colorado or Washington state.

LOL Actually, I think a circuit that uses a transistor as a switch to control power to the LED's might be a better first step. Or so I read. :)

None of the basic circuits I found showed anything about protecting against signal degradation. I wonder if using a mic splitter transformer would be the proper way to go about isolating the guitar's signal from the chaser circuit... ?
