Large volume drop when using the FX Loop

I am testing this by simply running a cable from the FX Send to the FX return for both L and R. To achieve level parity with the FXLoop block on or off, I have to dime the front panel Output Level for #2, which is sending the input into the red. Is there some other setting that I have to use the front panel to fix this?

It is normal to turn Out 2 all the way up as that is Unity Gain (assuming the signal going out is at unity as well).

You can adjust the Input 2 digital level in the I/O menu to prevent clipping the input.

Be sure that your Ins and Outs are set to Stereo if that’s what you’re testing. Also in the I/O menu.

OK, so I have the front panel output 2 set at 9 o'clock and in the IO menu I have input 2 set the same as Inst In (28.6%) and now I have volume parity with the FXLoop block in and out. Neither input is hitting the red now. So I think I'm good. I figured I'd include this for the next person who has the same ?

Thanks Chris!

Call this user feedback. I'd like it very much if the effects loop had the capacity to go over unity gain so it can compensate for effects that are a bit weak on their output. I'm used to amps that have effects loops that have surplus gain capacity and with them, the unity gain settings are usually with both the send and return knobs at high noon. When I found out how the effects loop level control works on my AFII I realized "OK, I'm going to have to learn to compensate for that!".

While I'm at it, I might make another product improvement suggestion: Provide level indictors in the block diagram, for every active effect. I realize this might suck up processing power so make it a switchable feature. Being able to tell where my levels are at, block by block, would be very helpful in getting them set correctly.

you can use the FX Loop block parameters to increase the output, or any block before the FX Loop block as well. majority of the time, people are NOT at Unity Gain on the outputs. turning up the Out 2 knob all the way is Unity Gain with Shunts only. once you put a block in there that does increase level (amp, drive, any block with the Level turned up), you are above Unity Gain. you can also increase the Gain slider in the Global Graphic EQ.

so there are countless ways to come out of Out 2 above Unity Gain.

this was provided in the Axe-Fx III. with its superior processing power, the III could accomplish this. i doubt we'll see it come to the II series.

That's one of the great things about the Axe-FX units: It seems that there is no limit to what they can do if you just know how to do it. The learning curve is not all that steep but it sure goes a long way!
