I remember that interview! I saw them back in early 2000's at the Galaxy in Santa Anna, Ty was standing in front of Mesa gear along with some Line 6 Rack mount stuff.

I also saw them a few years ago at San Manuel casino in San Bernardino. It was a good show but the sound was not. You couldn't hear Ty or Jerry's vocal at all. I Tried the pot Cigarettes but I guess the file is too large to post here :(

Yup. I seem to recall Ty saying he uses the Orange amps due to reliability AND because they
only do fly dates now and he has settled on them as the best backline option for him to do an
entire live show. My guess is if they were touring like they did back in the day and could finance
a proper crew he would probably not be using the Orange Crush.
In the Pete Thorn interview, Ty says the Orange 120 transistor amp was Orange's only amp that gave him the tone/attack he was looking for, so I think the tone was as important as the greatly improved reliability of his road rig. He also mentioned using an Axe Fx rig, but didn't elaborate on it.

For the Kings X stuff he uses the Axe FX for effects! I believe he might be using the Axe for his solo projects!
 
I've never tried to cop his tone, but I always felt like one of the Bogfish models (I don't recall which one) had a similar character. Might be worth a shot trying them.
This. The Bogfish Strato model seems to get me the closest when trying to cop pre-Dogman tones. I would try starting there and playing around with a mid-boost before the amp block (to simulate the onboard preamp of the Strat Elite) and adding compression via the gain enhancer.

So with my variax guitar, I can edit the volume control’s resistance and taper, the tone control‘s resistance and capacitance, along with the pickup type, pickup position, preset volume and pickup volume (increasing this would make said pickup hotter). Any ideas what I need to select to get close to Ty’s guitar?

If you look at the pickups on the Elite they were single coil type but they had a ghost coil under the pickguard to help cancel out hum. Other than that I don't think there was anything else that you can do with the Varix settings other than setting it up like a single coil guitar.

It's the presamp that really sets up the fundamental tone! Setting up a PEQ boost @ 500Hz and attaching a modifier to the level control would be a good start! The only question is the Q setting, without knowing how wide or narrow it needs to be you will have to tune it by ear!

The Clapton MDX Mid boost circuit is said to be close or the same as the one found in the Elite but they aren't showing the specs other than how much boost it will deliver @ 500Hz (25db).

I was playing around with the chorus block while making an Andy Summers/Police tone when I discovered that really low mixed chorus and flange blocks made my tone sound really hi-fi and extra stratty.........kind of like the onboard preamp in Ty Tabor's Strat Elite. I pulled up an old preset I was working on, added the chorus/flange blocks, added a multicomp and tweaked that sucker till the sound behaved more like a solid state amp and was pleased with the end result! It's obviously not perfect, but I think it's a good starting point for those trying to cop pre-Dogman Kings X tones. This was made with the III, but should be FM3/9 compatible.

*NOTE: The patch/clip was tweaked/recorded with a Suhr Pete Thorn with the Bridge humbucker in series, so this patch may slice your head off if using an actual single coil. Make hi-cuts if needed ; )

You might try using a verb (studio) mixed on the light side with a lot of early reflections coupled with the enhancer!
