I think he forgot to place the two large attenuating dials at the bottom of the instrument.

With modern technology, he could put the entire synthesis engine right into the instrument itself, plus a good effects engine, along with a hefty rechargeable battery.

That done, all he'd need to add is a lightweight amplification section and a pair of big round...speakers. (For stereo, you see,)
