Also, depending on which effects you're talking about, it probably didn't sound as good as dedicated effect units. I love my Factal stuff, but my Tube rig sounds better with dedicated effects ran in parallel through a real mixer than it does doing everything 100% through the AxeFx.

I don't quite get the logic behind the pre section being split into 2 stereo chorus pedals before the L/R amps. He used to use a TC Mimic at that position. One stereo chrorus instead of 2 replacing the Mimic I could understand (set to simulate doubling into L/R amps), but 2?

Maybe it has to do with wanting WDW again (if I heard correctly).
Maybe the Mimic only does stereo and would require extra mixer.
Maybe using two mono choruses that are set differently give a similar sense of randomness and have more tweaking options (Or are we sure they are used stereo? IOW, then it would be 2 parallel stereo choruses?).

If I have it correct what I believe he's trying to duplicate.
In the studio , it was mentioned that he uses the chorus, mono. And sometimes likes to double track that way.
So the two tracks are a bit phasing.
The pedals are not in sync to midi or anything like that.
Even in the studio, if the pedal settings are not touched, when he records that second track the modulation of the effect will not be in sync with the first track.
This is what I believe he is chasing.
So for live use that's where the second pedal comes in and it probably has slightly different settings then the first.

That was my thoughts exactly... it seems that the Axe is the less important piece of gear on the rig... but, if one can have A and B analog effect (let's face it - its JP he can have whatever he wants!) plus the Axe why not?

Not edited but take note that a. I am an internet rando that can barely string two chords together and 2. this was directed at the general TOP mindset of everyone needing to pretend like they play on a silent stage the size of a cereal box and they should have a micro-rig to keep their carbon gear footprint in check

Because they’re fun. Imagine someone doing something that isn’t 100% utilitarian. Petrucci has always had super complex rigs with pedals, amps, and rack gear. He thoroughly enjoys this stuff and I love living vicariously through him as he builds rigs like I would.

Axefx cannot always replace pedals (or amps for that matter), despite the excellent job it does, because a lot of devices are based on nuanced recipies simply not open for replication. Imo, analogue pedals / amps are not going away any time soon. Tone chasers like JP follow the quest whereever it leads: Analogue, digital, combinations of ... whatever.

I'm curious how that mixer works. It appears it's only 2 channels (Dual Stereo Line Mixer), so does that mean he can only run 2 effect units in parallel? I'm assuming those 2 effect units are the 2290 and AXE III.... then how is the 2290P and SDE-3000EVH connected? Maybe in series with one those rack units, but bypassed?
