In a Song Set, can I play a scene from preset 2 while holding the button, then release it and return to the previous scene of the song?

Hypothetical, I have a Song 10 with a setup like this"
Song 10
Scene 1: Distorted guitar from preset 100/scene 4
Scene 2: Distorted guitar with Phaser from preset 200/scene 4

During the performance of Song 10, I want scene 2 play while holding the button down, then when I release the button, return back to scene 1.

Can I do that? Or maybe I'm over-complicating it and it should be a "controller" setting? I was thinking I could use per-preset. I guess I'm not really sure how to do that.

Thoughts, experience anyone can share?

Perfect! Thanks for taking the time. I wasn't exactly clear if that affects the chosen switch for every preset, or just the modified switch for a chosen preset?

In theory you could use a momentary Control Switch and CS MIDI with a loopback cable to changes scenes using MIDI CC messages.

Got it! I think I may have found my solution on the forum and the following video. I think I need to use a Per-Preset and a custom layout and then add the scene from that layout to my song to achieve what I want to do. --- I think?

Per-preset switches will not give you that ability. As I mentioned momentary switch functions can only be done with a Control Switch and those can't change scenes.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you want, but both preset and scene select actions have an option for second press to go back to the previous location.

That could work for scene changes but I'm not aware of any momentary way to send midi payload.

CS MIDI sends the payload based on the control switch's state. It has separate values for on and off states. That should follow the momentary action of the control switch.

He wants a "momentary" scene change...

Think the typical EVH phaser trick everyone uses: press the switch and hold it. As long as it's held, the phaser it's active. When you release the switch it bypasses.

Now do that with a scene.

It's a cool idea and pretty sure it's been wished for already.

All that being said, the 2nd Press == Last Scene is probably the best option inside the box. All my scene switches are set that way.

Wow, I'm glad this sparked a good discussion. I was going for the EVH phaser thing as mentioned earlier. I was not exactly sure how to do it and not impact the layout globally. -- I'm still learning this FM9 after a couple years. I've reached a point that this function would be useful - whatever is best.

The only way to do that is as @mr_fender said before - use a midi "loopback" cable.

I started to type up more details but then I realized a big challenge here: in order to make it work it would always have to momentarily go to the target scene but then revert to a specific scene, not necessarily the one you were on when you pressed the switch.

If that meets your needs we can provide the details.

Also, note that when using a loopback cable you'll probably need to adjust some other global midi parameters. This is not something I'd suggest of you're not well versed with midi as it could get weird ;)
