If I buy a MIDI device, will it completely bypass Axe-Edit and my USB ports?

I haven't used a MIDI device for years and can't even remember how I used to hook it up.

However, I'm having problems I can't diagnose with my USB connection to Axe-Edit and need a backup (keeps giving me a USB error during install).

If I buy a cheap MIDI interface, will I be able to load firmware, presets, etc. without going thru Axe-Edit or the USB bootloader?
