I have to buy this!

Thanks, I was hoping for a bit of insight though into generically whether the X88IR can do what I am looking for. I will further research and maybe go into my local shop when they get one in. Seeing who plays the SLO100 didn't help me much as the range seems to be from Clapton to Metal players. Maybe I just need to look at something else. Anyway, thanks!
That’s the point it’s incredibly versatile but it is Soldano slo tone.
Did you watch this one;

Makes sense. For channels 2 and 3, would they be good for less clean but not Metal? Meaning tone like say David Grissom, and Classic Rock tones? I am not averse to variety, and in fact enjoy a bit of overdrive, crunch and gain. I just want to be able to get warm and clean tones also. Any thoughts on examples of the channels 2 and 3 tone in songs that you might recommend I check out to see if they appeal to me. I should say that I have enjoyed all of the Soldano amps in my FM3. I am just consistently having trouble dialing in warm and clean tones on any amps on my FM3. I am sure this is due to my lack of expertise, not any issues with the FM3.
The IR(s) you use in the FM3 (same goes for other gear that uses IRs) make a huge difference in the tone.

The X88IR can do classic rock tones and David Grissom-esc tones (if you have his fingers). There is a lot of gain on tap on channels 2 + 3 though, so it will do heavy stuff as well. I find it's a very versatile preamp.

Always best to try for yourself though.

I am using the X88IR into a Fender FR12. Sounds really good.

I’m over having to crank up an amp into a traditional guitar cab to get it to levels where it sounds good. I don’t miss exposing my hearing to that.
that's good to know...how i'd be using it as well should I pull the trigger on this (2025)

I can’t answer that for you, but so far I am very happy with the X88IR.

I was able to quickly dial a clean tone, edge of breakup, light crunch, heavy crunch, and two lead tones that all sounded really good, and all the tones were nicely cohesive with each other.

I am using the VP4 with the X88IR and may sell my FM3.

Are you able to play the X88IR at home studio volumes and get good tone? By home studio volume I mean with volume not so high that the neighbors call the police!

Yes just use the balanced outs.
That is what I use now on my FM3 so I do have the cables already for that.
So many choices here, but this helps to understand. I believe I mentioned earlier that on my FM3 I have enjoyed the tone I got from the Soldano SLO amps, and the X88.

@Andy Eagle do you think the X88IR would pair nicely with an AXE FX 3 + 4CM + 2 x FR12’s? Panning on getting the V3 boards for the FR12s when they are out.

This definitely has peaked my interest…

Yes I was planning to use it 4CM with my Axe 3 and Matrix gt1000 fx frfr with Xitone passive F12X200 equipped wedges. I have picked up a Fryette 2/50/2 so I have options.
I came up with a WDW rig . It goes 4cable Axe in to x88 in to 2/50/2 in to mesa recto 2x12 . Loop send back to axe then to the gt1000 fx and wet only to the Xitone cabs. Sounds epic.

Are you using x88ir in stereo 4cm ? Are you able to use the Power Sim/IR from the Soldano in this configuration ?

Put the fractal in the loop and in front and then set up patches without amps in my case because I am using an Axe 3 and run out of the X88ir with the balanced cables and then your using the power sim and IRs from the X88 . Or go from the main outs to a tube power amp and guitar cabs.

I’m using 2cm with the VP4 set to Kill Dry, in the X88 loop with a Lehle Parallel SW II to create a parallel FX loop with analog dry through.

I do think the analog dry through is worthwhile. It will only work properly (if you're using a VP4) for the delay, reverb and pitch FX though.

It could work with some other FX, such as compressors, where you could do parallel compression, but from what I have seen, the VP4 doesn't have the Kill Dry option for any effects other than delay, reverb and pitch.

I'm very happy with the Lehle box. It has the option to do true-bypass for the dry signal, or use their buffer. Because the X88IR loop send is tube-buffered, I am using it in true-bypass mode. The buffer on the Lehle sounds very good too though, and I typically don't like what buffers do to the tone, although they are a necessary evil sometimes.
