How to get that " satisfying " tone - speaker / setup recommendations ?

Hi guys,

I've had a FM3 for awhile. I've used it with decent monitors and headphones. obviously headphones will lack the acoustic connection with the guitar, and will not satisfy everyone in the "feel/tone" department . For me headphones suck - not inspiring at all unfortunately (audio technica ath-m50x are what i have.) Adam A5X monitors were better, but still lacked something for me.

still, i think my issue is lack of proper monitor/amplification setup. I know there are some high end FRFR wedge/speakers that people like - ATOMIC CLR etc etc.

also some people prefer to run the axe fx into a standalone power amp running into a legit cab ( this is probably almost identical to having a real amp in the room from what I understand?)

those expensive frfr speakers (atomic etc) / power amps are basically the same cost as buying a used dual rectifier head / 2x12 now. maybe I should just be using the FM3 as an effects unit and going for the real amp? or will those really expensive FRFR options be just as good?

anyway , to the ones who have been through the gamut with all of this stuff - in your opinion what left you saying " yeah , this is it! "

thanks.

Without knowing what “that ‘satisfying’ tone” is, or what was missing when your tone “still lacked something,” we’re just taking shots in the dark. Can you describe what you’re missing and what you’re looking for, or provide a clip of a tone that meets your criteria?

Sounds like you want something that pushes more air than the studio monitors. Take your FM3 to a music store and start trying out powered PA speakers/monitors. I have a QSC K10 that I’ve been using forever and it definitely feels more amp like due to the bigger sound.
