Hi,

I'm fully satisfied with the axe fx 2 in home studio.

But I don't manage to get a really good metal tone in live situation.
What is a good metal tone for me : Engl powerball II tone !

I did a patch and tweaked it but I always lack power (these low mids and this tight tone specifics to ENGL).

I run the axe in MATRIX GT 1000 FX and a 4X12 V30 cab (NOS).

It's not bad but my other guitarist plays a powerball 2 and the difference is well audible ! It is as if my sound is a little deaf.
When I increase mids and presence to get close to engl tone, I have a nasal sound.

For a better understanding of my problem I join you my patch.
Perhaps it's my fault, I confess I'm not a good tweaker !

Try blending 2 amps like the über dizzy or 6162 and pan on left and the other right. Also use the Shred distortion, also use a PEQ as your first block( before drive and amp block and boost 400,800 and 1kHz using a narrow q from 1 to 2db.

Haven't messed with the P-Ball in v10 but in v9, this is what's gotten good result for me:
Activate bright switch
Activate boost and reduce gain
If it gets too "plingy" sounding, try reducing definition

The Energyball model is one of the few that were still a good distance away from the original in v9. Don't know if this has changed since v10. You might also wanna try changing the tone stack to "Recto". This doesn't make it more Engl but it gives you a very raw and brutal high gain tone.

Good to know that I'm not the only one who thinks the Energyball doesn't sound like the actual Powerball. I once tonematched it with a power soak DI, which made the Axe-Fx II very close to the original, however, I lost those presets ... :cry

I'm picking up a friends 2X12 this afternoon ( I am cbless at the moment), I'll see how my Powerball patch sounds thru it and let you know what I think

You have to keep one thing in mind: saying that whatever amp in the Axe fx sounds exactly like the real amp is not really correct. I am absolutely convinced that the Axe fx amps sound exactly like the models that Cliff had in his setup, but tube amps have one "flaw", they don't sound the same! So even though the Axe fx might have an absolute correct model Cliffs Powerball it is very likely that your own amp sounds different.

I would shoot an IR of your mates cab and use that.

I'm thinking his cab is making the biggest tonal difference.

I don't think so. He is playing through an old Marshall with G12T75 and I use a NOS 412 in Celestion V30 (similar to a mesa rectifier).
