i came across this thread over TGP where Lance presents his new designed amp, the Retro Channel. every one is just shaking in awe, and then to find out there are NO TUBES. no problemo, as he says, the party goes on. the amp sounds good and as far as it is demoed by a great guitarist, everybody forgets about the lifetime obsession, THE TUBES.

go figure, there is no need for this little "glasses" to get a good sound anymore, all this bashing from forums some while ago is just gone...i had a good laugh

to be honest, the amp really sounded good, so it must be true (AS OF NOW), there is life after tubes :mrgreen:

Sounds great for SRV type stuff. If it cleans up nice I would really be wanting a good sounding reverb.

I love tube amps but the solid state can't sound good myth was busted for me years ago when I got a Tech21 Trademark 60.

Remember that even if there is seeming consensus, most often it is in deference to Lance and not any 'revelation' that tubes are not needed. Lance always sounds good and is a very good demo artist for gear - that's how he's making his living. For every guy that has the 'tube myth' busted, there are 100 more that still firmly believe it.

It has been and shall remain the main 'paradigm' for most players for a long time, if not for good. Guitarists are simply more traditionalists than almost any other instrument.

That amp has a great zz vibe going on... I like it. And for the money that is going to be a popular little amp.

i know Scott, i know. i was just intrigued by the aparently large group of people agreeing it sounds so good, even without tubes. that is just so not TGP.

If it was you or me, we'd have been burned at the stake. Put an Axe-FX behind Lance, but keep the audio the same, and he'd have been burned at the stake. It *looks* like a tube amp, so they don't go after him. People "hear" with their eyes. My opinion.

That explains some of it... I think the other part is some are just not ready to let go when it comes to a traditional looking back line. I know I used to relate a type of tone to what the rig looked like, somehow it magically brought something to the the sonic equation... pretty stupid isn't it.

You are right! Give Axefx an head style cabinet and traditional look... a SS poweramp... and rave about it :roll: :ugeek:

The fact that it's solid state was mentioned on the first page of the thread, and even after that was explicitly mentioned I didn't see much bashing. If it sounds good, it sounds good, no way around it. MOSFETs (and JFETs) have both similar response to tubes and similar mechanism of operation. Like a tube, depletion mode MOSFET conducts with no bias on its gate. Like a tube, when negative bias is applied it will gradually clamp down. Finally, it has similar "curves". There are some differences, of course, but a talented engineer could work around most, if not all of them. No one does this because people would rather pay a bajillion dollars for an amp that has tubes in it. Tubes, to some extent, are "proven" technology.

The only diehards I know are all 50+ years old. Each generation is more accepting. Of course guys online embrace technology by default.
