If I'm going for a finished mix then I'm not always trying to widen the guitar relative to synths or other instruments. I can see that if one were to use just a single guitar for heavy rhythm it would be useful. Where I find it most useful is for clean arpeggio or broken rhythms where its an absolute help.
 
I use it often with rythm sounds. For leads it's better to turn it off, the guitar should come forward during a solo.
