How hot does it get

Trying to plan for the incoming fx3 and had some questions about how some people are either traveling with or just keeping the fx3 when not gigging.

Youtubers mostly make their videos with the unit sitting on top of something rather than installed in something other than a desk. For those of you who gig with the fx3, what are you keeping it in when you travel? I've seen some plastic rack boxes around, never used one. The last time I bought an anvil case was over 20 years ago and the prices seem to have tripled since then so I thought I'd ask what everyone's using out there. I've seen the Schon video and I don't have a need for that many spaces nor do I need 2 of them. If I had to guess 3 foot high anvils or ATA are gonna be at least a grand if not more. I just can' see spending that much on a plywood box with some extruded edges and handle, plus those don't look to reduce shock to the internals.

Mostly though, does the fx3 produce much heat when operating at a high DSP that cooling needs to be added to a box?

I have mine in a Gator shallow rack. Mine it's a 6U because I have other stuff in there but a 3U is fine.

I have a front mounted patch panel and I often don't even take the back rack cover off.

So you're using the fx3 in a completely closed in box with no issues? I'm thinking worst case scenario for me is putting my wireless in it as well as power conditioning.

I gig the Axe III w/FC-6 weekly and it's housed in a Gator 4U rack. Added a patchbay to make connections quick and easy, both for home/studio and gigs. At home I only take off the front cover and have had no issues with ventilation/heat.

I did an outdoor gig last summer when the temperature was around 95 degrees. I brought my Axe FX in a 3U Gator bag. And stood it on its side next to the keyboard rack. The only precaution I took in consideration of the heat was to bring a white towel to throw over the bag so that it wouldn’t absorb additional heat from sitting in direct sunlight. It was fine, and we played for three hours.

JokerIII, can I ask what all you're using the patch bay for? Looks like a good idea but for what I'd need it for I think I can just go out the back, unless you're using a pedalboard, FC or expression pedals?

I used to connect everything to the rear each week. The patchbay just makes it quicker to set up and tear down. Everything in the patchbay is connected to the rear of the Axe III. Expression pedals are connected to the FC-6.

From left to right on the patchbay:

PowerCon to IEC Power > XLR to FASLINK II (FC-6) > Stereo XLR to OUTPUT 1 > Stereo 1/4" to OUTPUT 1 > USB B Port > 1/4" to INPUT 2

+1 on the gator 3U shallow cases.I have one ordered for my axe fx III and should be here soon. They are a excellent way to protect the unit without spending a lot of cash.

As I think about this more now, I never used to have an issue with time etc. But taking this on the road means connecting to FOH differently than I have so this makes sense. More cabling required than a mic :)

Fx3
Wireless
Conditioner
Patch bay
1U cooling fan just because

Getting too old to keep messing with things but I think this is gonna make things simpler. in the end. Not to mention I'm gonna be spending more time playing for a while just to learn it. The wife's gonna be thrilled once this thing shows up.
 
In my opinion, it is the heavy-duty, industrial design of the Axe Fx III that is one of the factors that make it the choice for many A-List touring and session artists. Session and touring artists must prioritize not only great sound making capabilities, but also ease of use and road-worthiness when choosing a major piece of kit. Again, in my opinion the Axe Fx III is superior to all other modelers because it sounds great AND is almost bulletproof!
