How do you acquaint yourself with a new guitar?

I look for dead spots

fix it until it's broke, ;)

I wish you were more wrong.

But, I'm not super worried about it. I did enough to a G&L legacy (which i had a tech rewire to strat stock and then sold) to realize that most of the weird things people do (series/parallel, phase, taps, splits, HPFs, etc) just don't appeal to me at all.

I usually hate a new guitar at first then I put my type of strings on and set it up like I like then hate it some more. I play my others and then the next day I pick up the new one and love it. But sometimes they get shipped back if I don't love it. That's my experience.

a recent guitar i got was an ESP E-II MII . It has BKP Aftermath pickups I dont bond with. But it's easy enough to swap em out for a different set of BKP's. I just have to decide which ones.

New strings, setup, if it's used and not totally clean I'll get it nice and clean, there's a lot to pick up on just doing that. After that it's just playing it!
