Help, I want to record!

In addition to mark's reply, if you have a store nearby where you can audition them, I recommend doing so. My local Guitar Centers have a decent "studio" room with multiple monitors set up. Bring a CD with music you're very familiar with that covers a wide range of frequencies and stereo spaces and you'll be able to hear each of the monitor's characteristics. Buy whichever you think you'd be able to comfortably mix on for hours at a time.

Did this with a friend and I liked the Dynaudios, but he liked and bought the Mackies. For his use, that was probably a good decision since the Mackies we heard had a better stereo spread and he entertains at his place with those speakers quite a bit. Genelecs ($$$) are also thought well of around here.

The downside for that situation is that you're limited to auditioning only the monitors that the store has available, but it will give you a better idea of what you're looking for and how they can differ.

Be careful when trying out monitors just because they sound good in the store doesn't mean they will sound good in the room you will be using them........ Also you might want to sound proof the room too or at least put something up to catch the sound refections. there's a lot that goes into buying monitors. Music stores will sell you stuff to make a sale but keep in mind "Frequency response" compare them to other brands

Thanks, yeah I'll have to make sure they have a good return policy just in case things don't sound right here at the house.
